The original story of The Phantom of the Opera is based on the real Paris Opera House and some interesting lore that has been the subject of talk for over one hundred years. The underground water system really existed, and mysterious happenings occured. Gaston Leroux's original story features a Christine Daee who was a singer only, not the singer-dancer Andrew Lloyd Weber turned her into to show off both his wife's singing and dancing abilities. His wife, Sarah Brightman, was the original Christine. There were some noticeable differences between the book and original stage production, but the overall story line was fairy faithful. The film version was very close to the musical, though many viewers were critical of the choice to cast a 16-year-old in an adult's role, a somewhat sexual role, with other adults. While the casting choices and acting and singing abilities have been the topic of criticism, the costumes for the film have been largely praised. On stage, the minor details are lost, but on the big screen, even the weave of fabric will be notices by those looking.
A note I must make about the stage versions of costuming is that the costumes, while overall very similar, do vary production to production. The same print isn't always available, laces are changed, construction or design may ne altered to better suit the particular actor or actress. Available supplies depend at least partly on the locaton of the production and the costumers working on it. So differences and intentional changes do happen. If you are interested in a stage version of a costume, please let me know if there is a particular production that interests you with photographs, if possible.
