In January of last year, 2010, I was approached by a local couple, Carmen and Seth, regarding Carmen's wedding gown. She had a love of Phantom of the Opera, and already had the design of her gown in mind, the top of the Don Juan ensemble with the poofy bustled tulle skirt of the Think of Me gown. I knew the combination would be gorgeous, and I just had to do it!
Over the following months, we met a handful of times to go over fabrics I'd bought and for fittings for the corset. This couple is just so sweet that I looked so forward to seeing them! Time seemed to move in leaps and bursts as my daughter had just been born when we met, and kids grow so fast time speeds up!
This is the result of 40 yards ot tulle, 40 yards of net, 10 yards of taffeta, and several yards of brocade and cotton and laces...
About 4 weeks before the wedding, Carmen asked me if I'd make her bridesmaids' dresses. She hadn't found anything she liked, and would love to have my flair throughout. It would be a challenge on such short notice while also finishing her gown, but she was just so sweet that I couldn't say no! Unfortunately, due to the time and so many gowns, with multiple identical gowns in various sizes presenting special challenges, a few shortcuts were going to be required. I also ended up making her veil and a taffeta petticoat and trimming them with the cream corset lace!
Of couse I happened to dislocate my right shoulder a couple days later, but it takes more than that for me to miss a deadline!
We decided on a cream tulle over a cream bridal satin, and a burgundy brocade for the halter and waist sash. I found the same brocade as used for Carmen's corset in the desired color. I would hem the dresses in the last couple days after fitting each girl independently. With the unpredictability of weddings, I didn't get to meet three of the girls until literally two hours before the wedding...at the venue! Talk about hectic! But it was a lot of fun!
It was quite something seeing Carmen walk down the aisle on her father's arm to "All I Ask of You" from Phantom of the Opera played on the harp. Their families are just as sweet as they, and I could talk for ages about how kind and awesome they are. It was a truly wonderful experience and day. My then-fiance/now-husband and I attended their reception as well.
In December, Carmen and Seth attended our wedding, and Carmen did all the make-up and my hair! I'm joyed to count her among my friends. I love clients turning into friends!
